With all the rain we had this spring/summer, you may not have been in the mood to do a true “spring clean” and decluttering of your home. Now that school is back in and the weather is more fall like, October is the ideal time to start purging old items and enjoying a decluttered home for the upcoming holiday season. This exercise can be done a few times a year until it is truly decluttered and junk free. You will feel so good when it is done!

Here are 5 rules that will help you get started on a clutter free home.

1. USE THE ONE YEAR RULE

If you have not used it in the past year toss it, donate it or sell it.

2.  LOVE IT OR LOSE IT

If you don’t love the item, or if it doesn’t have great sentiment toss it, donate it or sell it.

3.  EVERYTHING IN ITS PLACE

If an item does not have a purposeful place, find a home for it or toss it, donate it or sell it.

4.  ACCESS VS. OWNERSHIP

Books and movies are common items that people worry about letting go. “What if I need it?”. Remember, just because you donate the book does not mean it is gone from the world. Knowing that you have access to the item can make it easier to let go.

5.  TAKE A PICTURE

If you cannot decide if you are ready to let go, take a picture and put the item in a box. Then wait. It is ok to give yourself permission to give it six months or a year. After being out of sight, you may find you haven’t missed it, and it will be easier to let go.

That’s it! Try putting hard-to-let-go items through this list and watch your spaces get tidier and more purposeful.
